Max and Moonbean

Max's show‑and‑tells always go wrong. Then one night a shooting star crashes into his closet, and out steps a small blue astronaut who talks in bubbles. His name is Moonbean, and he has a question: will Max come to the moon to be his show‑and‑tell?

A story about a shy pup, a brave one, and the moment you realise they're the same dog.

Meet the two of them

Max resting his chin on the windowsill beside his teddy

Max

A pup with a woolly hat, a teddy called Mr Ted and a goldfish. Clever, kind, of impeccable style, and quite sure he is not very brave.

Moonbean, a small blue astronaut, dancing in the dark with bubbles above him

Moonbean

A strange blue thingy with a slightly odd stare who arrived by shooting star. Speaks in bubble‑speak, tells excellent jokes, and says “Piffaffle!” to the word can't.

From sketch to spread

How the story was made

Every Max spread began as a pencil thumbnail: a whole book roughed out on a few sheets, words and pictures finding each other page by page.

The storyboard on the right is the real working draft, with crossed‑out lines, alternative verses and a “squeak!” that survived to the finished book. Tap to zoom in.
